Kingdom Knight Slayer on XC 2019
After a full and fun several days at Kingdom Trails VT we opted to do a half day at Burke Mtn. While we're expert XC/Trail riders, flow trails aren't something that we've done much of. So... mostly cased jumps but started to get significant air on a few of them and it's soooo much smoother.
Super fun and a great way to quickly build the jump skills.
This bike is an Intense Primer with a 120mm dropper.
Be well!

Singletrack Trail Grooming - Dancing with the SnoTug
Просмотров 3703 года назад
Here's a sampler of preparing fat bike trails after a significant snowfall. This "tracksled" was called into action and had been untested up to this point. It looks fun and flowy (which is partly is) but is actually very dangerous. The 'Tug can dive off the trail or into a tree without warning, even launching the driver. The "SnoTug Mk III Excalaber" is made from a 15hp motor and 1970 SkiDoo Ol...

Trail Building Mistakes - and Injury
Просмотров 1155 лет назад
My son and I recently went and cleared spear-like stumps from a portion of trail that was hastily diverted by a community group. Noted the danger on a pre-snow ride. THE INJURY in the video is from another nearby spot but from the exact same trail building mistake. PLEASE for the safety of all trail users, encourage trail builders and volunteers to cut these back, and remove if you see them. I ...

Nice jumps!
Is that a sled that you made? It looks far than pulling a tire
Send a link for the tool for Amazon
I live in canada, i could buy a solder but could you ship the tool/end piece to me please?
Is soldering iron method better method than screwing in the stud into the rubber?
How would studs like this hold up in the city roads?
Not well. Bare asphalt and exposed rocks will result in lost studs, but then again if you're looking for increased safety and not worried about losing a few, go for it.
@@InflatablesMTB when you loose studs can you replace them in the same spot? Or is the rubber on the wheel torn up?
@@raczyk Sometimes you can replace them, I add a little superglue or silicone in the whole when I do.
Is this method better than screwing in the studs?
It depends on what you're going for. I've screwed metal screws in a tire to test it out for very icy conditions, which worked great, but I did lose several screws. The method in the video wasn't to very aggressive but all-purpose dependable.
@@InflatablesMTB never done it but I’d imagine screwing in the stud is more reliable than the method you used? Or is melting the rubber as you did, equate to more derivable studs?
@@raczyk In my case they were more durable when melted in because they were less aggressive and didn't tear out. Also depends on what screws you're referring to, type of tire, etc. Good luck
@@InflatablesMTB Good to know. How far did you studs stick out? I don't need my studs to be aggressive for the streets. I'll be installing them just on the outside of tire for cornering.
There's a park near my house that I like to XC ski in during the winter, always thought it would be neat to build a small groomer and use a bike to tow it. I have a fat bike now so maybe that's possible in the flat areas. Do you have any insight into the size to build the groomer and what to reasonably expect to get out of it?
Under the right conditions it can work. Evidently you need to keep it light and quite narrow to be able to pull it but unlike mechanized grooming, it would be more about agitating and smoothing the surface (versus compacting), which will therefore freeze into a decent base. Also suggest building it to not collect too much snow. Simply pulling an old car/trailer tire works quite well in the right conditions too. I now groom with a Snowdog type of machine but if you're looking for a killer workout (or out of necessity) good luck!
My kids were in sports. We had shoes with cleat. I’m wondering if you could get screw in studded or install pieces of female thread pieces into you tire just below the surface of the rubber nob. With a magnetic driver on a screw gun I can have them off on in less time than changing out the tires!
Studs shine on trail conditions that have gone through a thaw/freeze cycle. You can’t always see the ice underneath. But studs ( especially front studs) can keep you upright on icey off camber areas.
Loving the into tune it reminds me of good times ✌🏻👍🏻💯
Thanks for the very informative video. I just ordered neoprene toe covers at the same time as silicone brake lever covers. Hoping it will be enough to avoid freezing fingers and toes.
Why brand lights are expensive as fvck? about 10 times more expensive yet they don't have any tech or quality to really justify such insane difference in price. I think a quality light should cost more than the cheap but much less than the brand ones. So far what I been doing is buy cheap chinese lights, then replace emitters the driver and battery packs by custom ones, it ends up costing less than brand lights yet I can make them insanely bright or the color temperature I want. The prices of brand lights are a scam.
Luckily studded tires are cheap now in 2021.
This was great footage at the time but is so jittery and blurry compared to today's cameras. Need to go back and redo it!
I'm thinking about studding my Maxxis FBF & FBR Minions this year. How well did they hold up and for the tip of the soldering iron did you use a cut down nail. What was that?
Yes, I used a nail that was ground down to the right shape. They held up amazingly well. I did a review of the on DIY Studded Fat Bike Tires Review. Happy riding!
I've a fat tire ebike (750w bafang geared rear hub motor) can't wait to get the studded tires on it...and an eventual upgrade to a 1000w mid-drive for dbl the tourqe.
The large tote from walmart i've mounted on the back adds great stability, crash buffer, storage, and back rest.
Very helpful, I think you pretty much covered all the popular options out there!! I have the same problem with my feet and hands. THANK YOU :-)
Pleased that it may help. Thank YOU for the positive response.
I tried this method which works very well for me. Which will keep you upright and your bicycle stable and very rideable on the ice and helps keep you out of the hurtspital. 2each; Bontrager XR4 tires in 29”x3”. 400 + bontrager carbide studs, minimum of 200 per tire. And one stud insertion tool. 1 drill + 1/16” bit Automotive gasket silcone, to repair the holes on the inner side of tire if you drill too deep. I drilled too deep on occasion and a dab of silicone inside where you drilled too deep will protect your tube from the stud. Approximately 6 hours per tire at a casual speed. Have fun.
I'm going to give these a try, found them after much scouring. ARISUN Tires SHARKTOOTH 26x4.0 BK WIRE/60 (Amazon)
Good info. I haven't tried the neoprene toe covers. I need to get some. Snow gaiters are really good if you step off or fall into knee deep+ snow.
Awesome! Nice work!
Can't I just wrap my tires in chain?
Yes, a very small size of chain properly chosen and applied to your well chosen tire should work well. Key here is all components must be carefully chosen and tested through many trials. Good riding.
I feel the chains will need a texture, otherwise they will just be metal on ice and perhaps more slip?
@@Skeens55 Yeah I thought of that too. But I don't think anything wouldn't slip on bare ice, but snow, it would work I believe.
Dude! This is ingenious. I am so impressed!
Funny!
Nice
I have that Lightmalls M08752. You do not say anything about the quality which is very bad on the Lightmalls lights. If you open them up, you will find no heat management. The LEDs wont last long.
Poor kid looks cold in the back!
How can you tell from the 12 pixels that are in the video, where the kid isn't even visible?
I think your GT sled is limiting your foot placement which in turn limits your ability to steer in corners and on side slopes. My experience with the Snowdog (pulling the standard sled) is that being able to change your foot placement is crucial to keeping that beast on trail.
Thanks David. It's all been a learning process and I'll consider that while continuing the evolution of the groomers. This particular setup was for trying to pull something in new deep snow with minimal resistance. My standard groomer is a smaller version similar to the SnoDog single track groomer, but I was doubtful that my narrow tracked 7hp could budge it. I'm already building a second tracksled which will hopefully be more capable in new snow and able to tow more. We should chat about your SnoDog/grooming experiences sometime.
Super A+
Well done! Keep On Keeping On :-)
I think about that every time I see a sharp stump. They can easily make a penetrating wound and cause a bleed out on the trail. Sorry you had to be the one who showed us the dangers of these.
Thanks. In my case it was no big deal. I actually just used a toque tucked into my bike shorts to keep the -14C air from it and continued the ride. Probably due to the cold but it didn't bleed much and closed up really nicely. I am afraid for others though as that could easily impale someone.
Nice review! I like the style of talking about pros and cons while showing riding footage. Do studs rip out of pre-studed tires when these tires are used in shoulder season conditions with lots of exposed rocks?
Yes. "Sledge" lost 74 studs on his very expensive 29'er tires. I quickly lost a few on a former Dillenger too.
@@InflatablesMTB I'm currently looking at Dillinger...o_o hm...then again pros and cons...if the studs rip out, they are relatively cheap to purchase and the hole is still there (just...hopefully not to damaged)....I will safely assume that an e-bike going ~ 10-20mph most of the time, hitting any form of pavement outside of hard pack or ice, would cause some damage fast.
Nice overview of when to have them studs on your Fatty! Thanks man :-)
Thanks for the feedback.
The studs were purchased on Amazon. Prices are inexpensive and getting better. standard size 6.5x5.7mm, I believe.
The review video of this setup will be posted within days. Thanks for all the comments. Happy riding!
so how did they hold up?
Video followup will be posted this weekend.
Here is the followup... ruclips.net/video/W_ZJXoTIIoY/видео.html
I like the ingenuity, but if it is that labor intensive, I might opt to just spend the $1 each. Thanks for putting this video together, though. Very useful!
Time consuming yes, but an evening in the shop with a couple of brews can result in elevated performance and save several hundred dollars over buying a pre-studded. Plus, Bud and Lous weren't available as studded tires and I really like their performance. I have since studded some Terrenne Johnny tires but don't find their performance as good. Thanks for you comment.
What about my sons Mongoose?
$150 for bike light? No fokin way! China FTW!
Did you ever get the follow up video done? How have they lasted?
Video - sitting in the cutting room but the tire has lasted. I did ride it a couple of times with only slight coverage and it took a toll on the tire, and lost a few studs. But, it continues to work great in snow and ice. I've since moved to a Johnny 5 setup but still find the studded Bud and Lou to be at least as good.
@@InflatablesMTB Excuse a newbie to studded tires and fat bikes - but what is a Johnny 5 setup?
@@rolfnilsen6385 It's a model of tire by Terrene.
Yes, here you go... ruclips.net/video/W_ZJXoTIIoY/видео.html
An update video is coming soon. Not all of these lights have survived!
InflatablesMTB verry soon. Aha. Where is it?
Man , those Canadian accents! That’s Newfound land like you mentioned Mitch?
Very cool. Was worried for a minute you'd dropped the kid, lol..
I hate the way you say bat-tree
What is your favourite source for studs? I'm in Calgary, so Canada would be preferable.
Henning Johansen He usually prefers Buddy’s bar and grill on Weds nights. Probably your best source for some well rounded studz
what did you go with ? Im in same area and considering all these options. (except the M1978 non-sene of course)
Amazon.ca or fat bikes.ca both have them. The Amazon ones aren't as sharp but hey are cheap. For more aggressive ones, I prefer the ones with sharp ends (on fat bikes.ca). I've combined them in different patterns based on F/R and purpose.
I have no problem buying bike Chinese products. Some are very good. Unfortunately they failed me in the mtb bike light department! After trying about 5 diff lights between $20-65 dollars, I gave up and bought the Gemini Titan light set for $300.00 no comparison! Sorry. This is one area where I should have saved the money spent on Chinese lights and bought the real deal right off the bat. JMHO
good video , thankyou
I have the X-ML T6, probably a cheapo, but you know what, it's bright as hell when I need full power, low power is good enough for roads and I still have it 4 years later, unlike the horrible batteries for these things, I am on my third. Maybe a video on which batteries are best and where to get them without getting ripped off like on ebay.
imo the way to go is to get lights that use removable 18650 batteries, and have an assortment of extras. you can carry extra fully-charged batteries for the lights, and if you want you can also carry a small 18650 charger that will double as a powerbank for charging other devices
get the case for 6x18650 and problem solved.
What a beautiful day for a ride. Can’t wait to test out my first fat bike. Thank you for the post. Trails look amazing.
well shit man, well done that was a brilliant review! appreciate the effort.
